What to Do When Your Toilet Won't Flush: Troubleshooting Tips

A toilet that won’t flush can be a stressful situation, but before you call a plumber, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try yourself. If you find yourself in need of help during any of these steps, don’t hesitate to reach out to Bear Plumbing, a family-owned plumbing company serving Greene County, Montgomery County & surrounding areas. We’re committed to going the extra mile for our clients and are always available to assist you!

1. Check the Water Level in the Tank

If the water level in the tank is too low, the toilet won’t have enough force to flush properly.

  • Lift the lid of the tank and check the water level. It should be about an inch below the overflow tube.

  • If the water level is too low, adjust the float to allow more water into the tank.

2. Inspect the Flapper Valve

The flapper valve controls the release of water into the toilet bowl when you flush. If it’s damaged or not sealing properly, the toilet won’t flush.

  • Lift the tank lid and flush the toilet while observing the flapper. If it doesn’t lift or seal properly, you’ll need to clean or replace it.

Bear Plumbing is always available to assist with any toilet issues, including flapper valve replacements. We’ll ensure everything is working as it should.

3. Examine the Chain and Flush Lever

If the chain connecting the flush lever to the flapper is too loose or tangled, the toilet won’t flush properly.

  • Check the chain to make sure it’s properly connected and has enough slack to allow the flapper to open fully.

4. Check for Clogs in the Toilet Bowl

A clog in the toilet bowl is one of the most common reasons a toilet won’t flush.

  • Use a plunger to try and dislodge the clog.

  • If the plunger doesn’t work, try using a toilet auger to break up the obstruction.

If you’re unable to clear the clog yourself, Bear Plumbing can help with more advanced tools and expertise.

5. Examine the Fill Valve

If the fill valve isn’t working properly, the tank may not fill with enough water to create a flush.

  • If you don’t hear water refilling the tank after a flush, the fill valve may need to be adjusted or replaced.

6. Inspect the Toilet’s Vent System

A blocked vent can cause flushing issues. If you hear gurgling noises or notice slow drainage, the vent may be blocked.

  • If you suspect a venting issue, Bear Plumbing is here to help. We can inspect and clear the vent system to restore proper flushing.

7. Call Bear Plumbing
